Valerie strode onto the ward, her black high-heeled boots making a gentle click-clack across the linoleum floor. The ward staff greeted her with warm smiles. Fortunately, Jason Gray had been put on a ward where she was well known, so they just pointed her in the direction of a private room in a quiet corner. She had wondered if a police officer would be guarding the door but no one was there. Jason had probably outlived his usefulness to Sharples the moment Jackie had been released from custody.
She walked in to find him asleep. His face was covered in cuts and bruises, his right eye was badly swollen and his nose had been broken. The cuts and bruises on his knuckles indicated heâd put up a fight.
Sensing someone looming over him, Jason jumped awake, eyes briefly filling with panic until he focused on the dog collar.
âPiss off,â he told her. âI donât want a fucking vicar, Iâm an atheist.â
âNever mind,â she replied. âGod still loves you.â
âAye, it feels like it,â he said, shifting on the bed and wincing.
Valerie took the chair beside his bed.
âDidnât you hear what I said?â demanded Jason. âI told you to fuck off.â
âI heard. Iâm not deaf.â
He frowned at her. âYou look familiar.â
âYou probably saw me on the Gallowburn, although I donât have any nunchucks on me.â
His eyes widened. âOh, Christ, youâre a McVay.â
âI am and I want some answers. Like why you accused Jackie Gray of attacking you.â
âShe did.â
âCome now, Jason, we both know thatâs rubbish. Youâre afraid of someone and itâs not Jackie, although maybe it should be.â
âIâve no idea what youâre banging on about. Bugger off.â
Valerieâs gaze turned cold. âIf youâre rude to me once more, Iâm going to get very angry.â
âOoh, Iâm terrified.â
She thrust her face into his, causing him to push his head further back into the pillow. âYou should be,â she hissed in a way that reminded him of Toni.
The fury vanished from Valerieâs eyes and she sank back into the chair. âNow, youâre going to tell me why you said Jackie attacked you.â
âBecause she did.â
âOh dear, thatâs the route youâre going down, is it?â
âYes. Now Iâm going back to sleep, so sling your hook.â
âYouâre a slow learner, Jason. Itâs such a shame.â
âAye, well, I never did well at school.â
âIâm not surprised to hear it. Youâre selfish, narcissistic and completely without compassion. Thatâs how you managed to point a gun at your own son.â
âIf youâre trying to make me feel guilty, Vicar, itâs noâ gonnae work.â
âYou care about nothing but yourself. One day I hope you realise how wonderful your wife and children are and that youâre the one whoâs lost out. But I suspect youâre far too stupid to ever come to that realisation. Anyway, the only stupid life decision of yours Iâm concerned with is why you accused Jackie. I assumed youâd agreed to be beaten up specifically to set her up. However, now Iâve seen the defence wounds on your hands, Iâm starting to believe Iâm wrong. You didnât agree to that beating.
